ChatGPT outage!

The full rundown of what happened.

5th June 2024

Tuesday, June 4, 2024, was a challenging day for ChatGPT. After recovering from a major outage that affected millions worldwide, the issues reappeared later, again disrupting the service on both web browsers and the mobile app. Even platforms such as Perplexity AI and Claude AI have been experiencing issues.

Fortunately, everything seems to be back to normal now. If you still encounter problems with the web version of ChatGPT, OpenAI recommends performing a ‘hard refresh.’ Instructions for this are provided below.

The first reports of ChatGPT’s issues surfaced around 2:30 am ET / 7:30 am BST / 4:30 pm AEST on June 4. OpenAI acknowledged the widespread problem, with their status page indicating that the AI was down for several hours.

A fix was implemented around 7:30 am ET / 12:30 pm BST / 9:30 pm AEST, and the status page showed that all systems were operational. However, this solution was short-lived, and many users soon reported on social media that the service was down again. OpenAI later confirmed the renewed issues.

This marked the second significant outage of the day. The initial disruption started overnight and extended into the morning, being resolved early on Tuesday. Nevertheless, the system experienced another crash a few hours later.

While OpenAI hasn’t provided details about the root cause of ChatGPT’s largest outage of 2024, their status page indicated that the problem was resolved by 5:01 pm BST. We have contacted OpenAI for further comments on the situation and will update this post with any new information we receive.
